Welcome to Akiko Sugawa’s Pop Culture Research Studio.

This webpage contains information about academic research on pop culture, mainly the activities conducted in the colloquium of Akiko Sugawa Studio, Yokohama National University.

Anime and manga are nowadays known as examples of “Cool Japan.” In spite of the fact that Japanese amine and manga draw attention from all over the world there is too little academic research at present on these things within Japan.

At present what we are engaged in at the Studio (pre-colloquium) is called “2.5 Dimensional Culture.” Let me introduce our Studio to you.

By transforming ourselves through the fashion and elements of the characters from anime, manga, games and ornamental goods, such as “Yuru-chara (mascot characters) ,” “Omotenashi Busho-tai,” “Nekomimi (cat ears)” “cosplay (costume play),” “Tenimyu (The Prince of Tennis Musical)”, we try to understand and perform using behavior which exceeds the “boundaries” of things like gender (male, female, or other), or bodies (morphing into a woman, or changing form, or a mechanized unit, etc.), and the dimensions (second or third dimensions, and the past, present, and future). What is the pleasure this brings? Furthermore, what conflicts or negotiations are necessary? And, how are existing values and ideology disturbed through these transformations and boundary violations, and finally, how are new entities constructed? We want to consider the political dynamics and the pleasure that is conveyed by the contents of pop culture, through investigating, analyzing, criticizing, and performing essentially for the purpose of answering these questions.
